After visiting the north of Thailand, I set off to discover the south, starting with the Krabi region. There are many places to stop on a stopover in Krabi.

Personally, and on the recommendation of many others, I chose to stop in Ao Nang. This small town is located just a few minutes from Krabi and offers a magnificent beach. It was this last point in particular that convinced me! Ao Nang is quite touristy, it has to be said, but it’s also a perfect place to discover the region.

Find out in this article how I spent 3 days in Ao Nang in the Krabi region. You’ll find lots of tips and ideas for things to do in this beautiful part of Thailand!

3 days in Ao Nang, Krabi, Thailand: my itinerary

Day 1 – Ao Nang

The first day of your 3-day stay in Ao Nang, Krabi, will be devoted to discovering Ao Nang and its beach in particular!

If, like me, you’re arriving by night bus from Bangkok, you’ll be in Krabi very early in the morning. I advise you to take the songthaew directly to Ao Nang, if you’re staying there. There’s no need to search far, as there are several songthaew cabs waiting just outside the airport. The journey takes around twenty minutes, and the songthaew usually drops you off directly at the desired location.

After a short rest in your hotel – ours accepted our check-in at 7.00 a.m. – we set off for a stroll around the city and, above all, to enjoy the beach. It doesn’t take long to get around the town, which is mainly a main street with restaurants, bars and stores. It’s also very touristy. The beach is just down the road! It’s the perfect place to relax after a night on the bus.

On this first evening, I recommend you try one of the many restaurants on the main street, or one of Ao Nang’s two night markets. The first is very small and located on the main street, while the second, a little larger, is at the other end of town. To get to the second, it takes just under 10 minutes on a scooter.

Day 2 – Railay beach

Today we’re heading for one of the most beautiful spots in southern Thailand, Railay beach. This famous beach is one of the must-see places to visit during your 3 days in Ao Nang, Krabi.

There are two main ways to get to Railay Beach from Ao Nang:

  • Join an excursion like this one, for example
  • Get there on your own by boat

Personally, I chose to go by myself. Along Ao Nang beach, you’ll find a boat ticket stand for Railay beach. From there, you can buy your ticket and then take the small traditional boat to Railay. The journey takes just 20 minutes, but can be quite sporty if there are waves!

Railay has two main beaches. They’re just 10 minutes apart. I recommend you visit both places and enjoy a swim too. There’s also the chance to climb up to a magnificent viewpoint offering panoramic views of these beaches and the sea. Unfortunately, during my stay, the path was impassable due to the recent rains. Once your visit to Railay is over, simply return to the pier and head back to Ao Nang.

In anticipation of the next day’s program, I decided to rent a scooter on the way back from Railay. That evening, this rental allowed me to discover the city’s second night market. It’s much bigger than the first one and is also very close to where the Muay Thai fights take place.

Day 3 – Tiger Temple

This last of the 3 days in Ao Nang, Krabi, starts early enough to allow time to visit the Tiger Temple overlooking the Krabi region. This temple is one of the most beautiful places in the region. It’s about a 30-minute scooter ride from Ao Nang. I’d advise you to get there as early as possible, first to avoid the heat and then the crowds.

Once you’re there, all you have to do is make a donation and then climb the 1,200 steps. The climb takes between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on your speed and physical condition. It’s compulsory to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. I also advise you to wear sneakers. The view from the top is incredible, overlooking the entire Krabi region. It’s one of my favorite views in the whole of Thailand, I think.

At the start of the staircase are a number of monkeys. Although cute, they can be dangerous if you get too close!

This little jaunt to the Tiger Temple marked the end of my 3-day stay in Ao Nang, Krabi. I then left for Koh Phi Phi by the 14:00 ferry. I booked this transport directly on 12go.asia .

How do you get around Krabi?

There are several options. It all depends on what you want to do when you get there.

Taxi – Grab

Grab, which is Asia’s equivalent of Uber, makes it easy to get from point A to point B in Krabi. You have the “car” and/or “motobike” option, which I recommend if you’re traveling alone.

You’ll also find cabs and tuc-tucs all over town. Fares can vary according to the customer’s head, so be sure to agree with the driver before you get in.

Public transport – Songthaew

Public transport in the Krabi region is mainly Songthaew. These are pic-ups with seats in the rear. They are also easily recognized by their blue color. The destination is usually written on the songthaew and all you have to do is wave your hand for it to stop and pick you up.

My only experience with the songthaew was from the bus station in Krabi town and Ao Nang, some ten kilometers away. The fare was 60 Bahts per person.

Scooter rental

Scooter rental generally costs between 150 and 250 baht per day, depending on the type of scooter you choose. This option is perfect for exploring the area around Ao Nang and Krabi. The roads are well-maintained and wide.

You’ll find many scooter rental companies on the main street in Ao Nang. Personally, I rented mine from Mr. Sak Motorbike, which I can’t recommend highly enough!

Where to stay for 3 days in Ao Nang, Krabi?

Krabi province, and Ao Nang in particular, offers a wide choice of accommodation to suit all budgets. Personally, I chose to stay in Ao Nang rather than Krabi because the beach is much nicer in Ao Nang.

Our accommodation – Sabai Hotel Aonang

I stayed at this hotel, which is superbly located on Ao Nang’s main street. The rooms are modern and spacious. The hotel also has a sizeable swimming pool. The Sabai Hotel offers not only a hotel part but also a hostel part with dormitory rooms!

$ – TAN Hostel x Cafe

TAN Hostel x Cafe is a small hostel located just a few steps from the beach. Ideally located, the hostel is modern and offers a calm atmosphere. Dormitories are air-conditioned and all beds have private curtains!

$$ – Centara Anda Dhevi Resort and Spa

Located right next to the beach, the Central Anda Dhevi is a modern hotel. It offers an exceptional swimming pool and a perfect geographical location for discovering the city and the region.

$$$ – Ban Sainai Resort

The Ban Saunai Resort is located in an incredible setting not far from the center of Ao Nang. This hotel is one of the most beautiful in the region. Between the magnificent swimming pool, the palm trees and the surrounding cliffs, this is the place to stay if you want to treat yourself!

Where to eat in Ao Nang

There are plenty of places to eat in Ao Nang and Krabi, as well as a large number of cafés where you can relax for a while. Of course, it’s impossible to cover all the places between Krabi and Ao Nang.

As I like to eat locally, I can’t recommend the Night Market in Ao Nang enough. It’s great and you’ll find plenty of street food stalls to suit all tastes and at very low prices! I went there almost every night of my stay in Ao Nang.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this article on how to spend 3 days in Ao Nang, Krabi and that it’s given you plenty of ideas for your stay!
